The Gospel according to Shrek

Session 1: God's Love

In the movie, Lord Farquaad is evicting all the fairy tale creatures out of his kingdom because he doesn’t like them.  In our Bible story, we see that people who have leprosy are being treated in a similar way.  But how does Jesus respond?  How does God feel about people?

Start with the Introduction video, then watch the section of the film Shrek (see below), followed by Bible story.  After this, have a look at the second video, have a go at the craft activity and watch the songs – one of them is just very silly!

Session 2: God's Help

In the movie, Shrek and Donkey are trying to save Princess Fiona from the castle, which is guarded by the dragon.    In our Bible story, we see that Jesus’ friends were afraid and scared; they needed help and they asked Jesus to help them.  There may be times when we need help, but can we ask Jesus to help us?  Does He care?

Start with the Introduction video, then watch the section of the film Shrek (see below), followed by Bible story.  After this, have a look at the second video, have a go at the craft activity and watch the songs – one of them is just very silly!

Session 3: God's Friendship

In the movie, we get to understand Shrek and Donkey’s friendship.  Shrek says and does things that damage his friendship with donkey.  This causes a lot of hurt and pain between the two friends.  In the Bible story, we see that Zacchaeus’ words and actions have damaged his friendships; the consequence is that nobody likes him, and he has very few friends, if any at all.  But one encounter with Jesus changes Zacchaeus’ life forever.

Start with the Introduction video, then watch the section of the film Shrek (see below), followed by Bible story.  After this, have a look at the second video, have a go at the activities and watch the songs – one of them is just very silly!

Session 4: God's Forgiveness

In the movie, we see more of Shrek and Donkey’s friendship.  Unfortunately, Shrek continues to say and do things that damage his friendship with donkey.  Donkey says that friends forgive each other, because that’s what they do.  In the Bible story, we see that even though the son has made some wrong and hurtful decisions, his father is waiting for him to return home because he loves him and wants to forgive him.  Is that how God feels about us when we think, say or do things that are wrong?

Start with the Introduction video, then watch the section of the film Shrek (see below), followed by Bible story.  After this, have a look at the second video, have a go at the activities and watch the songs – one of them is just very silly!

Session 5: God's Serving

In the movie, we see Shrek and Donkey doing all that they can to help Princess Fiona.  In the Bible story, we see that Jesus does all he can to serve His friends; He even does the smelliest, dirtiest and worst of all the jobs – washing feet!  Jesus does this not only to serve and help His friends, but to show them the importance of us doing this for others.

Start with the Introduction video, then watch the section of the film Shrek (see below), followed by Bible story.  After this, have a look at the second video, have a go at the activities and watch the songs – one of them is just very silly!
